Pererenan Beach

Waves breaking over dark volcanic rocks at Pererenan Beach at golden hour

Just up the coast from Echo Beach, Pererenan is Canggu's calmer neighbor – a black-sand beach with rocky outcrops, surf for every level and golden light as the sun goes down.

The beach is watched over by its much-photographed Gajah Mina statue – half elephant, half fish – a Balinese symbol of the meeting of mountain and sea. Beyond it, the sand opens up for long walks, morning surf sessions and unhurried sunsets, with relaxed cafés, yoga studios and spas a few minutes inland.

Highlights

  • Golden hour on the rocks – waves crash over the dark volcanic rocks, a favorite spot for photos.
  • Surf for every level – small days suit improvers, while bigger swells bring out the locals.
  • Slow mornings – a beach walk followed by breakfast in one of the village cafés.

Good to know

  • Noticeably quieter than Batu Bolong and Echo Beach, especially on weekday mornings.
  • Check conditions before swimming; currents get strong when the swell is up.

Stay nearby: Arda Villa and Tegal Wangi Canggu are both in Pererenan village.
