Pura Luhur Batukaru

Tiered meru shrines in the stone courtyard of Pura Luhur Batukaru

Hidden in misty rainforest on Mount Batukaru's slopes, Pura Luhur Batukaru is one of Bali's most sacred temples and among its most peaceful places to visit – far from the crowds.

Founded in the 11th century and rebuilt in 1959, it is one of the island's directional temples, guarding the west of Bali. Its seven-tiered meru shrine is dedicated to Mahadewa, the god of the mountain, and moss-covered stone and towering trees give the temple an atmosphere quite unlike those in the south.

Highlights

  • The seven-tiered meru – the temple's main shrine, framed by forest.
  • Cool, quiet grounds – especially lovely early in the day.
  • Gateway to the mountain – the traditional route up Mount Batukaru begins here.

Good to know

  • Sarongs and sashes are required and available at the entrance.
  • Inner courtyards are reserved for worshippers, and parts of the temple close during ceremonies.
  • Bring a light jacket; it's noticeably cooler up here.
